Baked fried chicken can still get surprisingly crispy if you build the coating right. 🍗🔥
You get that crunchy “fried chicken” vibe with less oil and less mess.

Keys to Crispy Oven-Fried Chicken

  • Use buttermilk marinade
  • Add cornstarch to the flour
  • Use a wire rack so hot air circulates
  • Spray or drizzle with oil before baking
  • Bake HOT (around 425°F / 220°C)

Great coating combo

  • Flour
  • Cornstarch
  • Paprika
  • Garlic powder
  • Onion powder
  • Black pepper
  • Cayenne
  • Salt

Best method

  1. Marinate chicken in buttermilk + seasoning.
  2. Dredge in seasoned flour mixture.
  3. Place on wire rack over sheet pan.
  4. Spray generously with oil.
  5. Bake until deep golden and crispy, flipping once.

For extra crunch:

  • Toast panko breadcrumbs into the coating.
  • Or use crushed cornflakes for old-school crispy texture.
