Old-Fashioned Donuts –

Posted on May 26, 2026

🥣 Ingredients

🍩 Dry ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • 1½ tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp nutmeg (key old-fashioned flavor)

🥛 Wet ingredients

  • 2 eggs
  • ¾ cup buttermilk (or milk + 1 tsp vinegar)
  • 2 tbsp melted butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

🛢️ For frying

  • Vegetable oil (enough for deep frying)

🍯 Optional glaze

  • 1½ cups powdered sugar
  • 2–3 tbsp milk
  • ½ tsp vanilla

🔥 How to Make Them

1. Mix dry ingredients

In a bowl, whisk flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and nutmeg.

2. Add wet ingredients

In another bowl, mix eggs, buttermilk, melted butter, and vanilla.
Combine with dry ingredients until soft dough forms (don’t overmix).

3. Shape dough

Roll dough about ½ inch thick.
Cut with donut cutter (or glass + small hole cutter).

4. Fry

Heat oil to 175°C (350°F).
Fry donuts 1–2 minutes per side until golden brown.

5. Glaze or coat

  • Dip warm donuts in glaze for shiny finish
  • Or roll in sugar/cinnamon sugar for rustic style

😋 What they taste like

  • Crispy cracked edges (“old-fashioned” signature)
  • Soft, slightly dense cake interior
  • Warm nutmeg aroma
  • Sweet glaze or crunchy sugar coating

🔁 Variations

  • 🍫 Chocolate glaze + sprinkles
  • 🍁 Maple glaze (breakfast bakery vibe)
  • 🍋 Lemon glaze for brightness
  • 🧂 Sea salt caramel drizzle
  • 🍩 Cinnamon sugar (classic diner style)

⚡ Pro tip

Don’t overmix the dough—old-fashioned donuts get their texture from a slightly rough, tender batter, not smooth cake batter.

If you want, I can also make:

  • 🔥 crunchy “cruller-style” version
  • 🧁 baked old-fashioned donuts (no frying)
  • 🍩 or a filled cream donut version (bakery-style upgrade)
