Old-Fashioned Tomato Soup

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cans (14.5 ounces each) diced tomatoes, undrained
  • 2 cups chicken broth or water
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 cup milk

Instructions

Step 1: Cook the Onion

Melt the butter in a large pot over medium heat.

Add the diced onion and cook for 4–5 minutes until soft and translucent.

Step 2: Make the Base

Sprinkle the flour over the onions.

Stir continuously for about 1 minute to cook out the raw flour taste.

Step 3: Add the Tomatoes

Pour in the diced tomatoes and their juices.

Add the broth, sugar, salt, pepper, and garlic powder.

Stir well.

Step 4: Simmer

Bring the mixture to a gentle boil.

Reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 5: Blend

Use an immersion blender to blend the soup until smooth.

If using a regular blender, blend carefully in batches.

Step 6: Add the Milk

Reduce heat to low.

Slowly stir in the milk.

Heat gently for 2–3 minutes without boiling.

Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.

Classic Grilled Cheese Sandwich

Ingredients

  • 8 slices white sandwich bread
  • 8 slices American cheese
  • 4 tablespoons butter, softened

Instructions

Step 1: Butter the Bread

Spread softened butter on one side of each bread slice.

Step 2: Assemble

Place four slices butter-side down.

Add two slices of American cheese to each sandwich.

Top with remaining bread slices, butter-side up.

Step 3: Grill

Heat a skillet over medium heat.

Cook sandwiches for 3–4 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy.

The cheese should be fully melted.

Step 4: Slice and Serve

Cut each sandwich in half and serve immediately with hot tomato soup.

Grandma’s Secret Tips

Add a Little Sugar

A small amount of sugar balances the acidity of the tomatoes and gives the soup that classic diner-style flavor.

Use American Cheese

Forget expensive cheeses. American cheese melts beautifully and creates the creamy grilled cheese most people remember from childhood.

Low and Slow

Cook grilled cheese over medium heat so the bread gets crispy while the cheese melts completely.

Don’t Skip the Butter

Real butter gives the sandwich its signature golden crust and rich flavor.
