Salisbury Steak with Onion Gravy 🥩🧅

Ingredients

For the Salisbury Steaks

  • 1½ pounds ground beef
  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

For the Onion Gravy

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon thyme (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

1. Make the Patties

In a large bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.

Shape into oval patties.

2. Brown the Steaks

Heat a skillet over medium-high heat.

Cook patties for 4–5 minutes per side until nicely browned. Remove and set aside.

3. Cook the Onions

In the same skillet, melt butter and add sliced onions.

Cook slowly until soft and caramelized, about 10 minutes.

4. Prepare the Gravy

Sprinkle flour over the onions and stir well.

Slowly whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce.

Simmer until the gravy thickens.

5. Finish Cooking

Return patties to the skillet.

Spoon gravy over the steaks, cover, and simmer for 10–15 minutes until cooked through.

6. Serve

Serve hot with:

  • Mashed potatoes
  • Rice
  • Buttered noodles
  • Green beans or corn

Optional Add-Ins

  • Sautéed mushrooms
  • Heavy cream for richer gravy
  • Fresh parsley garnish
