Apple cake with the addition of chocolate chips!

Apple Chocolate Chip Cake

This moist apple cake gets an extra treat from chocolate chips, creating a delicious combination of sweet apples, warm cinnamon, and melty chocolate.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups (250 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • ¾ cup (150 g) granulated sugar
  • ½ cup (110 g) brown sugar
  • ½ cup (120 ml) vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 cups peeled and diced apples (about 2 medium apples)
  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • ½ cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease and flour an 8-inch or 9-inch cake pan.
  3. In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs, sugars, oil, and vanilla until smooth.
  5. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix just until combined.
  6. Fold in the diced apples, chocolate chips, and nuts if using.
  7. Spread the batter evenly into the prepared pan.
  8. Bake for 35–45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  9. Cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.

Optional Topping

  • Dust with powdered sugar, or
  • Drizzle with a simple glaze made from powdered sugar and a little milk.

Tips

  • Tart apples such as Granny Smith balance the sweetness nicely.
  • Toss the chocolate chips in a tablespoon of flour before adding them to help prevent sinking.
  • For extra flavor, add a pinch of nutmeg or a handful of raisins.
