Ingredients

  • 1 cup dried hibiscus flowers (flor de Jamaica)
  • 8 cups water, divided
  • ½ to ¾ cup granulated sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice (optional)
  • Ice cubes

Optional Garnishes

  • Lime slices
  • Fresh mint leaves
  • Orange slices
  • Fresh berries

Instructions

Step 1: Boil the Hibiscus

Bring 4 cups of water to a boil in a medium saucepan.

Add the dried hibiscus flowers, reduce the heat, and simmer for 8–10 minutes.

Step 2: Steep

Remove the saucepan from the heat.

Let the hibiscus steep for 15–20 minutes to develop a rich color and flavor.

Step 3: Strain

Pour the mixture through a fine-mesh strainer into a large pitcher, pressing gently on the flowers to extract as much liquid as possible.

Discard the used hibiscus flowers or compost them.

Step 4: Sweeten

While the tea is still warm, stir in the sugar until completely dissolved.

Add the remaining 4 cups of cold water.

Stir in the fresh lime juice if using.

Step 5: Chill

Refrigerate for at least 1 hour until thoroughly chilled.

Step 6: Serve

Fill glasses with ice.

Pour the chilled Jamaica water over the ice.

Garnish with lime slices or fresh mint if desired.

Serve immediately.

Tips for the Best Jamaica Water

  • Use dried hibiscus flowers, not sweetened hibiscus tea bags, for the most authentic flavor.
  • Adjust the sugar to balance the tartness to your preference.
  • For a stronger flavor, steep the flowers a little longer.
  • Serve well chilled for the most refreshing taste.

Flavor Variations

Cinnamon Jamaica

Add 1 cinnamon stick while simmering.

Simmer with a few slices of fresh ginger for a spicy kick.

Citrus Blend

Add orange slices or extra lime juice for a brighter flavor.

Sparkling Jamaica

Replace part of the cold water with sparkling water just before serving.

Honey-Sweetened

Substitute honey for sugar after the tea has cooled slightly.
