Old-Fashioned Blackberry Cobbler

Posted on June 14, 2026

Nothing says comfort food quite like a warm, homemade blackberry cobbler. This old-fashioned recipe features juicy blackberries bubbling beneath a golden, buttery crust. Serve it fresh from the oven with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for the perfect dessert.

Ingredients

For the Blackberry Filling:

  • 6 cups fresh or frozen blackberries
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Cobbler Topping:

  • 1½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • ¾ cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Filling

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine blackberries, sugar, cornstarch, lemon juice, and vanilla extract.
  3. Stir gently until the berries are evenly coated.
  4. Pour the mixture into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.

Step 2: Make the Cobbler Topping

  1. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  2. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter or fork until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Stir in milk and vanilla extract just until combined.

Step 3: Assemble and Bake

  1. Drop spoonfuls of the topping evenly over the blackberry mixture.
  2. Leave some gaps so the fruit can bubble through while baking.
  3. Bake for 40–45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.

Step 4: Serve

  1. Let the cobbler cool for 10–15 minutes before serving.
  2. Enjoy warm with vanilla ice cream or freshly whipped cream.

Tips for the Best Blackberry Cobbler

  • If using frozen blackberries, do not thaw them before baking.
  • Add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg for extra warmth and flavor.
  • For a crunchier topping, sprinkle a tablespoon of coarse sugar over the dough before baking.
  • Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
