Old-Fashioned Custard Pie

A smooth, creamy classic with a lightly golden top and a sprinkle of nutmeg.

Ingredients

  • 1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust
  • 3 eggs
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 1/2 cups milk
  • Ground nutmeg (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Place the pie crust into a pie dish.
  3. In a bowl, whisk eggs, sugar, salt, and vanilla.
  4. Warm the milk slightly, then slowly whisk it into the egg mixture.
  5. Pour filling into the crust.
  6. Sprinkle nutmeg on top if desired.
  7. Bake 35–45 minutes until the center is just set.
  8. Cool before slicing. Chill for a firmer texture.

Tips

  • Whole milk gives the creamiest texture.
  • Don’t overbake — the center should still jiggle slightly.
  • Serve plain or with whipped cream.

For a richer Southern-style version, you can replace part of the milk with evaporated milk.
