A smooth, creamy classic with a lightly golden top and a sprinkle of nutmeg.
Ingredients
- 1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust
- 3 eggs
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 1/2 cups milk
- Ground nutmeg (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Place the pie crust into a pie dish.
- In a bowl, whisk eggs, sugar, salt, and vanilla.
- Warm the milk slightly, then slowly whisk it into the egg mixture.
- Pour filling into the crust.
- Sprinkle nutmeg on top if desired.
- Bake 35–45 minutes until the center is just set.
- Cool before slicing. Chill for a firmer texture.
Tips
- Whole milk gives the creamiest texture.
- Don’t overbake — the center should still jiggle slightly.
- Serve plain or with whipped cream.
For a richer Southern-style version, you can replace part of the milk with evaporated milk.
