Chocolate Texas Sheet Cake

Ingredients

Cake

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Chocolate Frosting

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • Optional: chopped pecans

Instructions

1. Make the Cake Batter

  1. Preheat oven to 175°C (350°F).
  2. In a bowl, mix flour and sugar.
  3. In a saucepan, boil butter, water, and cocoa powder.
  4. Pour hot mixture into dry ingredients and stir.
  5. Add buttermilk, eggs, baking soda, and vanilla. Mix well.

2. Bake

  1. Pour batter into a greased sheet pan.
  2. Bake for 18–22 minutes until set (don’t overbake).

3. Make Frosting (do this while cake bakes)

  1. Melt butter in a pan.
  2. Add cocoa and milk; bring to a light boil.
  3. Remove from heat and whisk in powdered sugar and vanilla.

4. Finish

  1. Pour warm frosting over hot cake.
  2. Spread quickly.
  3. Add pecans if desired.
  4. Let set before slicing.

This cake is best served slightly warm—super moist, rich, and fudgy.
