Ingredients
Cake
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 cups sugar
- 1/2 cup cocoa powder
- 1 cup butter
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 2 eggs
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
Chocolate Frosting
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1/4 cup cocoa powder
- 1/3 cup milk
- 3 cups powdered sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla
- Optional: chopped pecans
Instructions
1. Make the Cake Batter
- Preheat oven to 175°C (350°F).
- In a bowl, mix flour and sugar.
- In a saucepan, boil butter, water, and cocoa powder.
- Pour hot mixture into dry ingredients and stir.
- Add buttermilk, eggs, baking soda, and vanilla. Mix well.
2. Bake
- Pour batter into a greased sheet pan.
- Bake for 18–22 minutes until set (don’t overbake).
3. Make Frosting (do this while cake bakes)
- Melt butter in a pan.
- Add cocoa and milk; bring to a light boil.
- Remove from heat and whisk in powdered sugar and vanilla.
4. Finish
- Pour warm frosting over hot cake.
- Spread quickly.
- Add pecans if desired.
- Let set before slicing.
