Ingredients

For the Cake

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 5 eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp butter extract (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Optional Vanilla Glaze

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2–3 tbsp milk
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven
    Heat oven to 325Β°F (165Β°C). Grease and flour a Bundt or tube pan.
  2. Cream butter, shortening & sugar
    Beat until very light and fluffy, about 4–5 minutes.
  3. Add eggs
    Mix in eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  4. Combine dry ingredients
    In a separate bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Alternate dry ingredients and milk
    Add flour mixture and milk gradually to the batter. Stir in vanilla and butter extract.
  6. Bake
    Pour into prepared pan and bake for 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 25 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Cool
    Let cool in the pan for 10–15 minutes before turning out onto a rack.
  8. Optional glaze
    Mix powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until smooth. Drizzle over cooled cake.

Tips

  • Room-temperature ingredients help create a smoother batter.
  • Don’t overmix after adding flour.
  • This cake tastes even better the next day.
