Slow Cooker Beef in Onion Gravy
Ingredients
- 2 lbs (900 g) beef chuck or stew meat
- 1 large onion, sliced
- 2 tbsp flour
- 2 tbsp butter or oil
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- Salt & black pepper
Optional:
- Mushrooms
- Fresh thyme
- Splash of cream at the end
Method
1. Brown the beef
Season beef with salt and pepper.
Dust lightly with flour.
Sear in a hot pan until browned.
2. Build the slow cooker
Add:
- sliced onions
- browned beef
- broth
- Worcestershire
- garlic powder
Cook on:
- LOW for 7–8 hours
or - HIGH for 4–5 hours
3. Finish the gravy
If needed, thicken with:
- 1 tbsp cornstarch + water slurry
Stir in at the end and cook 10 more minutes.
4. Serve
Best with:
- mashed potatoes
- egg noodles
- rice
- crusty bread
Flavor Upgrades
- Add caramelized onions for extra depth
- Stir in sour cream for a stroganoff-style twist
- Add mushrooms and thyme
- Use red wine in place of part of the broth
